Clearwire (housemate already has a station and contract) leads over Something with an actual physical cable running to the house (68 days ago)
Black racer snake (http://www.kentuckysnakes.org/snakes/blackracer-full.jpg) leads over Green racer snake (http://www.snakespecies.info/Philodryas-aestiva-1.jpg) (1 year ago)
Live simply - less stuff means less hassle and more space leads over Keep the stuff - you need it often enough and it's nice to have it around (2 years ago)
Skip - the old one can suffice for now, or at least the library's copy can leads over Buy it - the topic goes out of date fast and the old one was damn useful even so, so this is totally worth it (2 years ago)
High-intrigue plot-heavy with lots of thinking type leads over Dungeon-crawler smash-in-the-door monsters and lots of loot type (2 years ago)
Screw this, it's not worth the time, money, and emotional investment leads over Spend 15 years of my life with him/her, dealing with raw meat and occasional injury and interesting federal/state law (2 years ago)

Set in stone

I picked Plant it when I return at the end of August, so I can be there for intensive weeding and thinning of seedlings over Plant it now, so things start early and have full maturity and it's done before I get back (10 days ago)
Well, it didn't get done before I left, so if it'll happen at all it will be at the end of August :^)
I picked Take a 20-hour train, connections are easy, buy one ticket, $125 over Take a short nonstop flight, connections are hard (crash overnight with a friend), $200 (49 days ago)
Though I shouldn't have waited, as the train was $192 instead of $125. But still, WAAAY cheaper and easier than plane!
I picked Mess around (SimEarth, Wikipedia, work on backpacking blog) over Write a new D&D world (58 days ago)
Got distracted, hosed, etc. and hence messed around in my copious spare time :^)
I decided to do Something else rather than Apply for a permit starting from one of the less-common trailheads that still have spots open - meaning you'd definitely get it or Go to Yosemite, visit the permit station at opening time on July 29th, hope a permit is available, and spend July 29th bumming around Yosemite enjoying the sights (97 days ago)
Better - we got a permit for the same trailhead but a slightly out-of-the-way first night campsite. It'll be an extra day but the extra hiking looks like it comes with great views!
I picked Dye it now (matching colors!) over Hold off (the dye might get on the outfit?) (134 days ago)
I'll wash it out tomorrow morning. Having dyed it a week ahead, it shouldn't come off on the outfit...
I picked Shave, which will take ~30min but perhaps leave me cooler over Not care, since it's not like I care normally in the summer anyways (132 days ago)
I shaved in India instead.
I picked Toby Bradshaw - http://faculty.washington.edu/toby/ - studies the genetic basis of adaptive trait evolution in natural populations, especially as it relates to the origin of new species. Mostly plants. over Michael Nachman - http://www.eebweb.arizona.edu/faculty/nachman/ - studies the forces that shape genetic variation in natural populations, speciation. Mostly mice and rabbits. (150 days ago)
Hell that was hard. Hardest decision I ever made, actually.
I decided to do Something else rather than http://faculty.washington.edu/toby/ - "My general area of research interest is the genetic basis of adaptive trait evolution in natural populations, especially as it relates to the origin of new species. I use a combination of laboratory, greenhouse/growth chamber, and field experiments to study adaptation in plants and animals. My academic background is primarily in molecular biology, but I have a lifelong interest in organismal biology. I collaborate with ecologists, physiologists, and evolutionary biologists in many of my research projects. Graduate students are welcome to participate in an ongoing project, or to develop an entirely new project." or http://www.eebweb.arizona.edu/faculty/nachman/ - "Michael Nachman and the members of his lab study population, evolutionary, and ecological genetics and genomics. Most work is on mammals with particular emphasis on mice and humans. Research is focused on understanding the forces that shape genetic variation in natural populations. A first major area of research is aimed at uncovering the extent to which natural selection can be detected in patterns of DNA sequence variation, and in particular, in understanding the joint effects of selection and recombination in determining the distribution of genetic variation. A second area of interest is the genetics of speciation. This includes studies to understand the origin and consequences of specific mutations that may limit gene flow between populations and closely related species. A third main area of interest is ecological genetics, aimed at uncovering the genetic basis of traits that are known to be important ecologically. This includes studies on the genetic basis of adaptive melanism in mice." (169 days ago)
Blergh, this question was too long. Shortening and trying again.
I picked Seattle over Tucson (150 days ago)
In the end it came down to the city; I like Seattle better. Hard, hard, hard.
I picked Go out for a day or two, meet in-depth with people, and make sure I really get to know the people I wanted to talk to over Beg off, explaining that you're short on vacation days and time (196 days ago)
Particularly because I enjoyed the University of Arizona enough that I feel I need more info about UW Biology before deciding.
I picked Version 2 ($79, multi-fuel) over Version 1 ($69, white gas) (124 days ago)
Despite Version 1 being on sale for $15 less, I still find the flexibility (and the stove's added ruggedness as a result) too tempting. But with a 20% off coupon it was only $63!
I picked Visit UA and ask UCSD for another date over Visit UCSD and ask UA for another date (220 days ago)
UCSD says that they might have another date or do phone interviews - not the most helpful nor the most polite of answers. I asked them to let me know when they decide which they're doing, and said "yes!" to UA.
I picked Visit UA and ask to visit UCSD another time over Visit UCSD and ask to visit UA another time (220 days ago)
UCSD says that they might have another date or do phone interviews - not the most helpful nor the most polite of answers. I asked them to let me know when they decide which they're doing, and said "yes!" to UA.
I decided to do Something else rather than Work 0900-1300 and take the afternoon off or Work 1400-1800 and take the morning off (251 days ago)
Currently pretty exhausted and want the sleep. We'll see how I feel around noonish. (edit: woke up at 1:15 pm and said "screw it, I'm taking the whole day off.")
I picked Stay home and sleep off partying and spend the day running errands and cleaning house over Go to work and enjoy the vacation day later (grad school visits, trips, etc) and the quiet now (251 days ago)
A half-day sounds nice; I've enjoyed those in the past, and my accumulated time has a half day sitting in it. (edit: woke up at 1315 and said "it's icky out and I'm feeling lazy; I'm going to stay home")
I picked Go to one or more parties at houses of friends over Invite a few close friends over for a quiet evening of games, champagne, and watching the ball drop, plus yummy desserts (254 days ago)
I'm feeling lazy and like I haven't had a good social outing lately. I'll be going to a big-ish party in Boston with some friends. Plus the T runs late, which solves that problem.
I picked Go just around the corner for food truck food or Boloco over Seek out more exotic fare up the street at the Longwood food court (256 days ago)
Had a really nice berry smoothie and a thai-inspired burrito (grilled chicken, peanut sauce, rice, slaw). Very nice, and probably a lot more nutritious than crap from the food court. And for once a meal that actually fits my stomach size and leaves me neither starving nor bursting! (this is amazing)
I picked Remove the internal-only information from my online grade report and submit that, though it lacks course names over Scan the official paper transcript I have, breaking the official seal and rendering it unusable (256 days ago)
I added course names in the Audit Info column instead, and submitted that; it's basically official. They say I can send an official one in later if I get admitted. And sadly the unofficial transcript thing is only for current students, plus the thing is due Jan 1 :^(
I decided to do Something else rather than Buy the hard drive and hope the laptop stays good for another year or two. or Mirror the hard drive nightly and hope it stays good until June-ish, then ask Dad for a new laptop for grad school (256 days ago)
Borrowing a 60 GB from a friend (thanks, seph!) for the near future; we'll see how the laptop holds together at this point. Sadly, my grad program is unlikely to buy me a laptop, and most lab stuff in biology works with Macs/Windows :^( Perhaps I'll buy a laptop when I move out west.
I picked Come in on Sunday as though it were Monday, leaving at 6pm for my 7pm activity Sunday evening over Just take a personal day and take Monday off (268 days ago)
Came in today, lab is nice and empty, and I can take Monday off. That way I have a contiguous "weekend" (Sun-Mon). But essentially the same, leaving at 6pm.
I decided to do Something else rather than Get the logical gmail account (same username) just for future use, set up forwarding or Not bother; I should always be affiliated with an educational institution (276 days ago)
The logical gmail account and any variations that make sense aren't available... the only ones that are have all my middle names and are too hard to remember. But I agree I'd like one, though it seems now that waiting to choose is not so bad.
I picked Joe's reading instead, maybe dinner after over Holiday party at work, possibly dragging R along (272 days ago)
Everyone in my lab is laughing about "oh, and are you going to bring so-and-so to the party" with the undercurrent of "s/bring/inflict/;" so I think I'm okay. There seems to be universal hatred for Division-organized parties.
I picked Sleep in an office chair (comfy) bent over a desk (airplane style) over Sleep on the floor (I have pillowesque materials) (278 days ago)
I slept in a chair, head pillowed on my polarfleece-lined coat on the armrest, curled up sideways in the chair, with my leg along a desk. So kind of both.
I picked Go visit the in-laws or visit dad or stepfather for a short period of time - maybe Saturday-Wednesday over Stay home, get some work done when nobody else is around (yay!), and have some time at home to chill and relax (276 days ago)
Flying to R's parents Sat-Weds, meaning taking 3 vacation days (including Christmas) but keeping the rest for work. Still not sure what to do with the feline, though I think we can bring him to R's parents'...
I decided to do Something else rather than Stay working M-F 0900-1730 as usual. or Keep working 0900-1730 MWF and work 1200-2000 (or 1100-1900) TR when I can. (172 days ago)
My schedule's wonky enough (leave early Mondays, have stuff in the evenings TW, nothing RF) these days that I just come in between 0900-1000 most days and leave between 1700-1900 most days. It all works out eventually.
I picked Buy new hiking boots and break them in starting March-ish, or buy new ones now and wear them and use my current ones for the trip only (comment for which) over Keep with the ones I currently have and use them for the next 6 months including the trip (169 days ago)
Got some heavy-duty backpacking boots at REI. I've done some hiking with my super-comfy old ones and the uppers aren't as supportive as they used to be, not really a solvable problem. I'm going to start breaking these in now and see how they work out.
I picked Go with the idea that I've had stuck in my head for 6 years. Less well-developed but issue-free. over Go with the more recent (1.5 year) idea. More well-developed in my head, but has other issues (publication, characters, etc). (307 days ago)
Two chapters written so far... and I've run out of the stuff that I wrote in my head in the past. Time to go where no writer has gone before... :^)
I picked Sleep in and hike in the Fells over Sleep in (or not) and work Swapfest (323 days ago)
Sleep in until 1000 and hike in Natick, which is almost like hiking in the Fells.
I decided to do Something else rather than Go just for Kenna and leave afterwards or Not bother (316 days ago)
Apparently we punted due to forgetfulness :^( Otoh, I was really hosed from work that week,so *shrug*
I picked North to south - Yosemite to Whitney. Resupplies at start of trail (days 7 and 13), highest passes at end of trail. over South to north - Whitney to Yosemite. Resupplies at the end, highest passes at the beginning of the trail, camping in Yosemite at the end. (119 days ago)
The Whitney permit lottery was in February, waaay before we had dates set. Plus N-S is easier for coordinating people coming with us. Plus I get altitude sick easily, so acclimatizing slowly is a good idea. Etc.
I picked Do something else (what?) over Go on an overnight backpacking trip Sunday/Monday (where?) (336 days ago)
Saturday - subject GRE, chilling, cheesecake Sunday - hike in a wooded park in Hingham, crepes, bowling Monday - have a friend over, make cake, chores. Not bad. Should do this more often!
I picked Not bother. But install Cygwin. over Dual boot the machine. For times when you're not doing Windoze-stuff (i.e. coding) it will be nice to have the change. (172 days ago)
I installed Cygwin and an X server. It's usable at this point, barely so.
I picked Pose. You can choose something not-hella-sketchy-but-still-attractive, it will be fun and amusing. over Not pose. Potentially damaging for future career moves. (316 days ago)
I even had a creepy dream about it last night... as long as the appointment ever gets scheduled.
I picked Go anyways. It will be amusing to see what other people do, plus possible fun run-ins with the public. over Not go. Seems kinda dumb, plus dealing with crowds. (351 days ago)
It's a whole 12 minute walk from my house and housemate is going. Worth the walk just for the amusement value if nothing else.
I decided to do Something else rather than Go. Take the bike, get an extra 10 miles of exercise, and be social. Free food! or Fuck it. It's not your fault work is so incompetent about planning events. Go to the class (1-4 pm) and then go home. (357 days ago)
Found someone taking a carpool at 4 pm. Hitching a ride with her... otherwise I wouldn't have gone! I'll bring my bag and get her to drop me off by a T or bus stop.
I picked Schedule them in the late afternoons, and just go home afterwards. Make up the few missed hours during the rest of the week. over Schedule them in the middle of the day and head back to work afterwards. Make up the missed hours the day of. (363 days ago)
Every Monday at 1510. It seems like I can make up the 3 hours later in the week... plus less stress.
I picked Pick them up at the local CVS. Close to home and convenient, but a CVS. over Pick them up at the hospital where I work. A little further from work, but a hospital pharmacy rather than a CVS. (341 days ago)
The local CVS pharmacy is open 24/7, which is Really Nice. And they're on my way home from work.
I picked Get a practice book (Kaplan, etc - recommend?) and work with that as the foundation - more test-focused review over Review basic concepts from classwork, check out textbooks, a little at a time - more general-focused review (351 days ago)
Getting a book for the subject test - will take its first test, study, then take its second once I know what I need help on. Will use the GRE-provided software (just arrived Friday) to take practice general tests.
I picked Continue with the new stuff over Switch back to the old stuff (1 year ago)
Mixing the two didn't work (he ate around the new stuff), but he seems to have finally started eating it.
I picked Do it. You'll be on campus tonight anyways and people have mentioned they'd really appreciate you coming. Plus, it's a lot of fun, and might help you get through the week. over Not do it. 1.5 hours of sleep is not nearly enough coming into a Monday of work, especially since you seem to have a habit of sleepdepping yourself during the week. (1 year ago)
That was exceptionally stupid, especially staying up late to watch MITMoonHenge, but you only live once. Falling asleep at work was not so clever, though, but it was thankfully a slow day.
I picked POS over HMO (1 year ago)
It was cheaper and more flexible (and they're generally more expensive!).
I picked Ask questions! over Ignore it for a while. (1 year ago)
I asked lots of questions about insurance.
I decided to do Something else rather than Tufts. They don't farm out mental health, cheaper (waived) ER copay, $1,000,000 lifetime maximum benefit. or Harvard Pilgrim. No max lifetime benefit, mental health is farmed out to another company, $50 ER copay (not waived), maximum out of pocket of $2k/year. (1 year ago)
I went with Partners Plus instead, which is the quasi-in-house POS. If things are really shitty I'll switch to Tufts during Open Enrollment.
I picked Show up after Orientation on Monday (which runs 0800-1530) over Show up on Tuesday (what time?) (1 year ago)
Orientation ended late (~1555), so I walked in the pouring rain to work just to stick my head in and say hi. The boss was out, but the postdoc I'll be working with said to come in at 9 tomorrow and stay dry otherwise!
I picked Ask someone for a ride from Cambridge or the train station. over Walk it - time to reflect, get some exercise, experience the green world one last time before work starts on Monday. (1 year ago)
I asked for a ride and another person attending offered me one ten minutes later. It'll mean more time waiting at the train station, thus likely plenty of time to relax out in the 'burbs, without the 3 miles of walking in the 88F thunderstormy weather!
I picked Run the dryer forever to dry them off over Hang them to dry in an open space, then just let the air take care of it (1 year ago)
It's now down to about 70 minutes with a fan, etc. We just let them all dry in the dryer. Hopefully the repair dude will come soon.
I picked Not go over Go (1 year ago)
Flopped around and cleaned a little in that sitting on the floor sorting things way.
I decided to do Something else rather than Keep it all for myself and eat it straight or Bake it into things and feed them to housemates (1 year ago)
... I'm a dork and failed to eat or bake the dough. The yeast made really pretty patterns in it though...
I picked Replace the broken parts - cheaper and the laptop is a pretty damn good machine, and it will suck to lose the serial and parallel ports. over Wait until August when I have a job, then buy a new one. This one has gotten to be a real headache, and more stuff might break in the future. (1 year ago)
We just fixed the big one (power cord) with a new solder job and it works great. The CPU fan hasn't deteriorated further since the initial issues back in Aprilish, and the battery actually holds about 45 minutes of charge. I may replace the CPU fan once I have a job, though. And I do like serial and parallel - the former was essential during 6.115.
I picked Silver. Different, shiny. over Black. Traditional, classy. (353 days ago)
I still just like the silver better, and I've seen both. And I don't really mind if it scuffs.
I picked Go with the ones recommended by friends, slightly more ($20 in total) for the items I want, but has free shipping. over Go with one not mentioned, $20 cheaper, no mention of free shipping. (1 year ago)
14-0 is pretty convincing, and I hadn't thought about the $20-shipping bit. Good point, thanks all!
I picked Put one together at my expense and keep it for future use - I'll need a first aid kit for backpacking sometime soon. over Put one together at their expense; most of the stuff doesn't expire and we might use it again someday. (1 year ago)
I have most of the basics already; adding a few extra things won't cost me much and is much lazier. Plus, having it all in one place is a good idea.
I picked Not go. There are other things to do around the house, and a fair number of other people are going. over Go - it'll be good to spend some time out of the house, plus you just might learn something. Maybe email in advance asking if you'll be useful. (1 year ago)
Wrists and ankles are killing me. Spent the day lying on the couch reading. So no trip to campus with wrist-heavy antenna work!
I picked Borrow the Icom. Haven't tried it yet, and don't think I'll need a weird headset adaptor for it. Unknown but possibly more fun that way. over Borrow the Yaesu again. Known quantity. Won't have headset adaptor, so it will be noisy. Dependable and reliable, especially at sea. (1 year ago)
If I get any experience using it this weekend I can choose on Sunday night and be certain of a good choice. I don't *need* it for Field Day, it will possibly (depending on who is where) make things a little simpler.
I picked Teach him to be held quietly without squirming over Teach him to come when called (1 year ago)
Now that he's learned that being picked up does not necessarily equate to bad things happening, he seems to like it fairly well. We were able to use it to clip his claws!
I picked Just move out 100% and check out and make a clean break, changing residence wholly on June 3 - crash in room June 3-9 if necessary but avoid doing so otherwise over Move out everything but a small suitcase and backpack and sleep on the couch (which I'm leaving) so I don't have to T home every night during graduation week - then take suitcase and backpack home on the 9th (1 year ago)
Setting stuff for small suitcase aside and packing in small suitcase. Will take with me, but have available to shove stuff in backpack and crash overnight if necessary. Ting home is something to get used to, plus housewarming on Thurs means I actually need to move in RSN.
I decided to do Something else rather than Put all the rest in suitcases and stuff them in the closet - better sooner than later. or Leave them - they're easy to pack and the suitcases will be clumsy. (1 year ago)
Packing the things I don't use often/won't need (i.e. down coat!). Stuff I'm more likely to use will get packed Friday. I have a list of "definitely needed" clothes to work off of, so... yeah.
I picked Not bother - the date they told me last week is probably the right one. over Call at ~0630 when I leave here, hoping (incorrectly) that someone will be there? Or call Monday (despite it being a holiday)? (1 year ago)
Completely forgot to call. But it worked out very well, and less time waiting than usual because of the earlier appointment time working with trains!
I picked Not bother - the house will be peaceful enough, there's a huge park next door, and it might be kind of weird. Plus, is there enough space? over Make one of the two rooms into a quasi-Zen garden - someplace peaceful where people can retreat for some peace and quiet (1 year ago)
Definitely work on making the sleeping-bedroom more relaxed - darker lighting, bigger bed, etc. Other room for socializing, meaning books, most of the stuff, etc. Just sitting in the kitchen is damn peaceful, but having a quiet sleeping place is good.
I picked Go in costume. You're going with ~30 Randomites, some of whom will be going in costume, and it will be fun and silly. over Not go in costume. Lame! Also possibly uncomfortable. Better to go in street clothes, less likely to get snarked at/be sad walking home. (1 year ago)
The other four people in the kitchen are all costuming. I'm not going to be an undergrad for much longer - wtf, why not. I don't need to be up early anyways.
I picked Stay up, shower and dress now - you need to be awake at this time for the next 4 days, this is a decent start. over Go to bed - get ~3 hours of sleep, it'll get you through today, then sleep early. (1 year ago)
After breakfast, a shower, dressing, and packing for errands, I feel stellar. Here's to being stupid without screwing myself completely.
I picked LJ, Blogspot, or other internet posting/journaling/blogging site over Make your own (1 year ago)
lj filters are my friend
I picked Not go. Today and the last week have been exhausting, and a day with nothing in it will be really nice for once. You can sleep in! And run errands. There are other folks in the club who can help out. over Go (comment - 0530 or 0830? 0530 = setup, 0830 = gate opens for buyers). The club needs help, you said you'd go (in as much as everyone does), and you had a blast last time. Plus you're not really doing anything Monday. (1 year ago)
Well, I slept for 12 hours straight. I think that says something about how much I needed sleep!
I picked Not wear it. There's a chance it could offend someone (perhaps more of a chance than at a wedding without the Chinese family element), and that would be bad as well as in poor taste on my part. Wear something else formal instead. over Wear it. It's lovely, fits you well, and in general is the right level of formality, plus it swooshes lovingly. You've gotten tired of skirts and tops. (1 year ago)
I went with an ensemble of the same colors and same swishiness level that's less likely to offend.
I picked Tell him during Commencement weekend. His being happy over my graduation might show him it's not the end of the world. I don't want to keep this a secret any longer and I want to tell him in person over a cup of coffee. over Wait until some better time. It's Commencement, the grandparents will be here, and there's no need to stir the pot and possibly trigger a family Incident by doing so. (1 year ago)
Told him over dinner the first night. He took it surprisingly (nay, shockingly) well and seems to have just kind of forgotten about it...
I picked Just take the 0900 train and get there two hours in advance. It's summer, so it's not like I'm missing much, and I can probably explore the area a bit before each appointment. over Bike from Boston along Route 16. Will take a while but on nice days worth it. Then take bike on the train home (allowed), or bike home if I'm feeling up to it. (1 year ago)
I forgot that with this kind of physical therapy I really oughtn't to be biking at all (or wearing jeans, or whatever), not just after therapy but during the therapy's course. Plus Wellesley is right down the street so I can walk around the lake on nice days (and there's a big waiting room on rainy days).
I picked Take the job. She's met you halfway, offered a 5% increase in salary, and seems to have calmed down. Other people think she's okay. over Decline it. It's better money, but the initial response to the negotiation was still really negative, and another friend who interviewed with her had a bad experience. (1 year ago)
Replied - spoke with HR about the benefits, which are good, and said I'll commit 100% once I receive the formal offer letter. It's only a year, and having a stable job is a win.
I picked Stick with the job; it's guaranteed money and the research is really neat. The manager may be silly but the rest of the staff were really nice and quite bright. over Pass on the offer. A rude email before the job offer is even formally extended is a very bad sign. Plus a friend says he's worried and has met the manager before. (1 year ago)
See previous comment. The salary went up and she calmed down, and a previous employee said she really liked the manager and the lab.
I picked See a Counseling Dean now (rather than waiting until Tuesday) and talk about options over Wait and see what the doctor says (1 year ago)
Counseling dean tomorrow at 11, doctor at 2. Keeping professor for 6.115 notified of situation. Apparently something like this sick has been going around the doctors at Medical!
I picked See how I feel in the morning and call when I wake up if I'm not feeling well over Call and reschedule the job interview, explaining that I'm sick (1 year ago)
Was a little nauseous this morning but made it through the interview fine. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Should know by Friday.
I decided to do Something else rather than Try craigslist one more time or Just give up and hire a realtor (1 year ago)
Scanning craigslist and talking with the realtors that we find therein (i.e. find a place, get a showing of that plus the realtor's other places, repeat until satisfied). We'll probably find a place that a realtor shows us, but it will likely be *found* on craigslist.
I picked See whether the current opening pans out - it sounds fun and I still have three months to find a job if this falls through over Start looking elsewhere now - can't hurt to have more choices (1 year ago)
The interview went well and I was able to negotiate a higher salary despite lacking other offers. I'll be starting work in August with the lab who interviewed me.
I picked Just mail her the coat - it's only ~$5 and the key is probably a lost cause. over Insist that she bring the key with her and make her come here to pick the coat up. (1 year ago)
She apparently can't get a ride to MIT or drive here, but is quite willing to mail me the key. So I'll mail her the coat - it seems like a fair trade.
I picked Not bother - last Samhain you were pretty uncomfortable with the way the ritual was done and the differences in belief make you feel kind of funny - not exactly offended, but not 100% happy either over Go anyways - the group could use the support and you have enjoyed some parts of the Samhain ritual in the past (1 year ago)
I'll celebrate in my own way on Sunday (though Wednesday is the correct date, the ritual is after sundown so it wouldn't be the right day anyways).
I picked Just put it off until the next regular run (this Tuesday); hopefully you'll be better by then. over Run anyways. Not feeling too terrible, and I can always talk via zephyr :^) Plus I'm about to take a nap. (1 year ago)
Feel crappy post-nap. Better throat, worse body.
I decided to do Something else rather than Stay in lab; maybe the TAs/LAs will be in lab later tonight (have to leave by 1930) and I can get it done sooner or Go home when I'm done with 21M.540 and get some food and rest. If my schedule doesn't fit with the TA hours I can bitch at Leeb for not releasing it earlier. I'm already missing desk for this, he can damn well be timely (1 year ago)
Leeb finally got back to me and said "no TA hours tonight." I hope he posts them soon, because if I need to check off between classes I need to punt desk. I did manage to debug (with Robert's help) the exercises that broke!
I picked Drop it. You don't need it to graduate, you'll learn the material at some point later and you're not learning it now. Not having to do the next four psets will help the stress a bit. over Keep it. The material is useful, even if you're not learning much. Grad schools might like to see it. (1 year ago)
Dropping it, after a long lengthy self-conference to make sure I'm not dropping it to be lazy. I'll be seeing my advisor this afternoon.
I picked Wear my old Head button along with my job one over Just go with the job one, no point in wearing the old Head one. (1 year ago)
Tradition, or something :^) It'll explain the feathers, at least.
I picked Not punt all the fun stuff - only punt some of it, or none of it. The issue isn't so much the time as how you manage it, and punting all the fun will make you go batshit insane. over Punt all the fun stuff - better to not stress about classes by getting stuff done. Sucks, but you'll survive. You're here for the academics, even though you're cleared to graduate. (1 year ago)
Not punting any (though I will probably not work all of Swapfest so I can go to 6.115 lab). Turns out (given I dropped a class just now!) that I've only got a 6.115 lab and a 6.115 quiz due next week for major assignments, so... yeah. *sigh* Damn MIT :^)
I picked Get it now - I won't be using it during CPW, but it'll be nice to have something to listen to while walking back and forth between Harvard and here and is a nice way to just ease into using one over Wait until I need it during the summer for a backpacking trip - no sense in getting something now that I don't need now (1 year ago)
But first try a few different models from the loaner program to make sure I know what I want.
I picked Take a break. You did class->lab checkoff->class->4.5 hours in lab, that's enough tooling for today. (suggestions on what to do? I've got a computer and food and headphones, no desire to move) over Do the listening now - better to get it over with! (1 year ago)
If it weren't music for this class... yeah. I just spent 4.5 hours writing similar stuff and I need to listen to something non-experimental. Plus Wikipedia is great for reading about types of antennas.
I picked Basically state what steps I would have taken in each situation - a more process-based approach over Write some basic pseudocode for the programming sections - a more code-based approach (1 year ago)
I described the steps, which was what the TA actually wanted to hear. When I said I hadn't done it he said I wouldn't get any credit, but he was pleased that I at least had thought about how to do it, which is doubtless a good thing.
I picked Be patient. They're people too, even if they have all the sense of direction of a pack of sheep. over Kill them all and let (whatever) sort them out afterwards? (1 year ago)
The sheep appear to have dispersed beyond my means to reach them. Not My Problem! If they reappear sometime soon then I will try and lead them forwards.
I picked Meh, take time off before I start working; dealing with kids is not my forte, even if we have some stuff in common. over Consider it somewhat - it might be a rewarding experience, maybe give something back. It's not like I'd be living in the boonies or away from friends... (1 year ago)
I got unhappy enough learning that a friend's dad had died recently from cancer that being around a lot of (possibly unhappy) kids in the same situation seems poor.
I picked Drop it - you've got enough on your plate with 6.115 and two other classes, and if it isn't fun why do it? over Keep it - stats is useful for biology research, even if it sucks now. Admit it, you *are* learning something, as unpleasant as it is. (1 year ago)
See later doxory for an explanation.
I decided to do Something else rather than Stay home tonight, debug as much as possible and finish the lab, then go into lab tomorrow morning and test the code before lecture or Stay home tonight, debug as much as possible, and call it a day. I'm taking it P/D/F for a reason. (1 year ago)
We copped up a functional but yakkish version of the device that I'm supposed to use in lab (it's just a serial input device, so yakking it is not impossible). I've finished exercises 1-5, and am coding 6; I'll test things on the lab equipment before my checkoff.
I picked Complain to the professor - maybe talking with him directly will at least get an explanation for why the hours are so pathetic. over Not bother - it's been going on for years like this and talking with him is unlikely to change anything other than possibly pissing him off. (1 year ago)
We had a bit of a chat, but the issue was kind of ignored even though I brought it up - I'm going to try again in a bit and see if things improve.
I picked Stick to P/D/F; it's not like it's in your major anyways, and it'll mean less stress about the final project, maybe over Switch to taking it on grades - the worst case is you'll get a C and wish you'd done it P/D/F, but you might get a B or an A, which would be good (2 years ago)
This way I don't have to stress about the final projects, I can suck at checkoffs and not stress afterwards, and in general I'm more relaxed. I might ask Leeb if I can know my letter grade after - not so I can go "Doh! Why didn't I switch!" but so I can know how I did. *shrug* In the long run, I suspect this really doesn't matter anyways; this class is for me, not for future employers or any crap like that.
I picked Celebrate quietly over Throw a party (2 years ago)
I've been doing it already anyways :^) And throwing a party seems kind of weird.
I picked Stick with it - it's not like there's anything better out there, and the other shiny features are worth it. over Switch to something else - sacrifice functionality for nonbloatedness. (2 years ago)
Sticking with FF for now, but we'll see if things keep going okay (it's much better than it used to be, oddly). Who knows if the Debian Iceweasel will be other than just a free port of FF - maybe they'll futz with it positively?
I picked Take the day off and punt egregiously, possibly screwing myself slightly for next week over Start tooling tomorrow so I don't have it all pile up on top of me (2 years ago)
I picked Stay home and apologize to the professors, explaining that my doctors were concerned I'd hurt myself (which is true) over Suck it up and go to class; I'm not crippled, just kind of gimpy, and as long as it's not icy I should be fine (2 years ago)
Stay home from morning lecture and the Harvard class. I have an appointment on campus, plus lab hours that I *must* go to in the afternoon (for two classes, in fact!), so I'll head to campus once, thereby decreasing the risk, or something...
I picked Ask professors to allow me to type up what I can (i.e. lab notes but not statistics problem sets) and be gentle on my hands otherwise while waiting to see what the doctor says over Talk to the Disabilities Office about hiring a scribe, which will make things slower and suck for finals (also involving dealing with Harvard's finals system, sucking more) (2 years ago)
DSO and I had a chat about typing nearly everything, including finals (apparently they can loan laptops that lack wireless cards), and maybe LaTeXing statistics psets. Looks like we'll wait to see what the doc says and then go from there.
I picked Help solve them, because it matters so much. Final term senior, and taking classes I can deal with. over Run away, far, far, away, and concentrate only on my studies. Someone else can solve them. (2 years ago)
Fuck it, it's not that much time and it's personally relevant too!
I picked Treat it as an extra MIT class and study until the exam, getting my license sooner and with Morse. over Wait and just not take the Morse section until later. (2 years ago)
It's not as hard as I'd thought... here's to hoping I pass!
I picked Buy the book now - $15 isn't worth not being able to read the book for the first week or so of term. over Wait and see if he takes the class, dealing with not having the readings for a week or so. (2 years ago)
Yay for Amazon Prime - the savings in fast shipping make up for the $15. Oh, and the problem set is 75% questions from the book. And it's due Wednesday.
I picked Try taking NSAIDs around the clock, possibly switching from ibuprofen to naproxen over Call my PCP (GP) and ask for something stronger (2 years ago)
We'll try this first. Then switch if it doesn't get better.
I decided to do Something else rather than Celebrate! Less time stuck in class with The Abercrombie Clones! or Be sad. The prof is a sweetheart and the subject is wonderful. (2 years ago)
Both, as trs and jtu said.
I picked Accept defeat and head to bed around 2300 over Take a quick nap to refresh, then go to bed at 0200 (2 years ago)
I picked Party like it's 1999 over Get ready for classes to start (2 years ago)
I picked Stay at home, save the money, and do something related later over Rent a car and drive there (2 years ago)
$35-45 for car plus $15 each for admission makes less sense if we're only going for people watching. I think we'll hit up something fun in Boston instead...
I picked Start looking now, and explain that I'm free in 9 months to any prospective employers over Apply nearer to September (maybe near the end of this semester) so it's less weird (2 years ago)
I decided to do Something else rather than Take a nap or Cut my hair (just a trim, to remove split ends, but it'll take an hour or so) (2 years ago)
I did both! The person driving us to dinner arrived an hour later than I expected...
I picked Leave the MIT class 10 minutes or so early (it's a 90 minute class) and not stress about missing the T over Dash to the T, hoping it won't be late, and not risk missing any material in the other class (exams will suck) (2 years ago)
Though the point about getting a bike is a good idea. Drat, I wish I could bike :^) On the other hand, I do have rollerblades, and those are really easy on the knees... now I just need some safety equipment.
I decided to do Something else rather than Work desk - I don't know most of the people at the party and the main activity isn't as good for me as usual or Punt desk - it'll be good to socialize, even if I can't participate in the main activity (2 years ago)
VHF radio competition!
I picked Type up the thank-you notes and apologize for not writing them by hand, getting them done faster over Write them by hand anyways, going very slowly and sending them out rather later (2 years ago)
I decided to do Something else rather than Read a lot of books this week or Watch a lot of movies this week (2 years ago)
Spend all of my time going through old papers and tossing reams and reams of them. In other words, clean my room and get it ready to be moved in June.
I picked Stay at home - best not to tempt myself with the thought of playing myself! over Go, login to the server and watch rax's games and actually listen to the lecture instead of just playing like we usually do (2 years ago)
Went out to dinner at Christopher's instead :^)
I picked Stay - it's a long ride and I've gotten 14 hours of sleep in the last 72 hours and could use a nap over Go - see the ~30% that I'm particularly fond of, and have a pretty good time before heading back to desk tonight (2 years ago)
I slept, though not well.
I decided to do Something else rather than Cold or Flu (2 years ago)
Turns out it was a 48-hour "Feel like shit" virus, with no actual fever or other really nasty symptoms. Sore throat, muscle ache, and congestion were the lot. Maybe a cold, though a fast one?
I decided to do Something else rather than Get the store's attempts at cough syrup, which work but taste awful. Artificial! or Use herbalism to make my own, which tastes better and has worked in the past. Natural! (2 years ago)
I was too sick to go to the store to get either...
I picked Get the equivalent dish (authentic, unlike my questionable attempt) from the delicious Indian place across the street over Make paneer (cheese) tonight so I can make lots of tasty food tomorrow night so I can have lots of tasty leftovers (2 years ago)
I picked Get up that early for fun and public service - I can always take a nap later over Sleep in - they can get other volunteers anyways. (2 years ago)
I picked Call the doctor again and listen to him tell me I don't have Lyme disease/arthritis and argue about the fact that the pain is specific and debilitating over Hope that swimming helps with most of it and ibuprofen and massage takes care of the rest (2 years ago)
I picked Keep seeing the therapist (professional) over Join a support group (jury of my peers) (132 days ago)
Found a better therapist.
I picked Attempt (and possibly go to great lengths) to obtain (n-4) tickets over Pick the best 4 out of the n (those I'm closest to) and tell the rest "too bad" (2 years ago)
Attempt to some length to get 5 tickets (the number needed); if not, Dad's girlfriend can go sit in the room. He mentioned that he knows it exists and won't be Sad if she can't watch in person. People: dad, stepfather, dad's parents (I'm the only grandkid, so they're really looking forward to it).
I picked Go in Summer 2008, leaving work early before graduate school in Fall 2008 over Go in Summer 2007, after graduation and before I start my job in Fall 2007. (1 year ago)
Boy is thesing this summer, so no go in 2007, plus I have physical therapy weekly all summer. Figures! Next summer will be great.
I picked Research Celtic mythology and related topics over Begin teaching myself Gaeilge (Irish Gaelic) (2 years ago)
I picked Make multiple cakes to satisfy the group over Settle for something esoteric in the hopes that all will be satisfied (2 years ago)
I picked give them to a local charity, since some child will probably adore them - charity! over go argue with the store she got them at (tags attached, but no receipt) and try and exchange them - profit! (2 years ago)
I decided to do Something else rather than celebrate that day, during class, and be amused by the coincidence or wait until actual signs of spring to celebrate and treat the day as any other (2 years ago)
Class was canceled that day (since it apparently doesn't meet Fridays); celebrating soon anyways.
I picked Eat the pizza in the freezer, because it's there for times when I feel this way over Go to Star, restock all the perishables I don't currently have, and make something complicated (2 years ago)
I picked not go, save the money and do something else fun that weekend over go, volunteer to cut the admission fee, get an advance copy of his book, and look at the art and see the main speech (2 years ago)
I picked forget about it, relish the free time and go to the concert at the end over take it, buckle down and lose Monday/Thursday evenings, but probably enjoy the music more (2 years ago)
I need those hours for personal sanity time! And D&D runs.
I picked not visit, since they're already burdened enough and I don't know what I could do over visit for a few days and try and help them out however I can (2 years ago)
I picked Swim 30 minutes every day over Use one of those elliptical things (2 years ago)
I picked damn, it's a lonely job over time-and-a-half pay is great (2 years ago)
I picked no, they're understandably biased over yes, they're open-minded (351 days ago)
Depends on the person, but generally no :^)
I picked wait until March vacation to bring it personally. over ship it now, risking breakage. (2 years ago)
I picked frame it for him. over let him frame it himself. (2 years ago)
I picked 6.115 - why not have some fun? over evolution - you need the background for grad school (2 years ago)
I don't want to take half of my classes my last semester here at Harvard. Plus, evolution apparently comes with a 3 hour lab attached. Yucko.

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
