While I don't have qualms about auditioning, I don't think I have the time to actually make all the rehearsals and performances. If that changes, I might go out for it next year.

Sure, why not? You'll either get in or you won't.
Only skip the audition if you won't be able to actually keep up with the rehearsal and performance schedule should you get in.
What's to lose?
Improv is the greatest thing in my life, and is the best release you'll find anywhere. Grab onto it for dear life.
Why not? You can always say no later, right?
