My choice: MIT

MIT, unless you like living in LA...
spang
We love you, don't go to LA!

(I don't actually know anything about Planetary Science grad school here, but, y'know, school spirit and all... ;-)
Mark
The SL9-impact work was done at MIT EAPS and that was way cool :-)
MrDrake
MIT all the way, though both are good

"MIT Ph.D." has a certain ring to it. All I know about UCLA is it has a basketball team... which one involves someone working on the airborne observatory?

...but then, I'm someone who doesn't find the LA climate or environs really all that appealing.

It sounds like you like MIT better academically, and that one of the main reasons for going to UCLA would be the environment/climate. I hate the long winter too, and occasionally wonder how going to college in California might have affected my mental health. However, there are some things you can do (specifically in the Cambridge area), to make the winter less horrible: * Go spend some time periodically in a nice greenhouse. I bet MIT or Harvard has one. There's one at Mount Holyoke, and when I actually remember to go sit in it during the winter, it makes me feel much better. *Go hot tubbing, something I gather you're fond of. There's a place called Urban Oasis in Cambridge that I haven't actually been to but that friends recommend highly to me. *Make sure your room gets a lot of sun.

Thinking about that stresses me out. I'd pick based on where you want to live.

I am not so much with the asteroids.

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
