Doxory?

susannah: n a few months, I'll hopefully be making a commitment that involves, as a minor detail, not eating certain foods for the foreseeable future. Certain foods which I've never actually eaten, since I've been a vegetarian for most of my life. Some of these foods I have no desire to eat, ever (eg, shrimp), but some I have a vague curiosity about (eg, rabbit).

Try the ones that sound interesting now, so I'll know what they taste like and whether I'll miss them (I suspect not, but you never know...)

*shrug* Life's an adventure - try things out! Indulge your curiosity - you've got the self-control to hold to the course.

Helps with the cultural context. (I'm a vegan of ~8 years FWIW)

Makes the sacrifice more meaningful :-)

Don't try any of them - better to be vaguely curious about them but never have tried them than to risk the possibility of being constantly tempted by something

You'll be tempted either way, and it seems against the spirit of such a commitment to try things first.

I don't think you'll be constantly tempted by any of them, but I don't think your life is greatly diminished by having or having not tried them.

...depending on how you feel about wine not made by Jews.

If you get addicted to something, it'll be that much harder to stop.

if you're definitely going to stick with the dietary restrictions after the commitment it seems wrong to go against that now as a last minute indulgence just because you haven't made the formal commitment. if you think you want to mostly stick to the dietary restrictions, but think you might decide to be flexible about them, then it may make sense to try things now so that you know whether you think being flexible after the commitment is worth it since then it may feel like a more weighty decision.

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
