Any brilliant advice would certainly be appreciated. Shameless advocacy is often good, too.
Is this even a question?
I watched the Firefly with my folks and my dad loved it. He said that it was just like watching the <here, I have to groan> westerns like the dirty dozen, that he likes, but with that spacey kind of feel... Yeah, go for the firefly.
Depends on your parents
Get them Firefly AND Serenity.

This partly depends on what your parents think of regular TV. Battlestar Galactica does a lot of the same things with tense drama that mainstream TV does, but does it better and smarter. On the other hand, Firefly is good in part because it shuns overused TV techniques. Battlestar Galactica is probably more approachable for someone coming from a mainstream TV audience.
