Long hair is actually pretty easy if you treat it right; wash it properly, try to avoid wearing it down too often, and suchlike. I've had it all my life and it's never been a hassle for me!

Keep it shoulder length, because it's possibly more practical and I probably only want long hair because of peer pressure

Long hair may be pretty, but it's also more work to maintain. If you value practicality, you probably want it shorter.
