It's become really clear that it's a hardware problem. And yes, I will be backing it uo before sending it off to the tender mercies of AppleCare.

it sounds like a hardware problem (just from the 2s., remote diagnostic)
Bring it to an Apple store and see what they say.
backup the hard disk contents first!
Inconvenient, but a better use of your time. The turnaround is surprisingly fast IME.
