Just started playing KOL, but I imagine getting used to oxy would be hard.

Tough call. Have you succeeded the triathalon in the shadow of doubt? Softcore is usually a good introduction - unless you're bulletproof.

I was hopelessly addicted to this game a couple years ago, and haven't let myself return to the site since I quit cold turkey. Good to hear it's still going strong. ^^ (I quit pre-ascension, so I can't give knowledgeable advice on your question, sadly.)
