I now keep the laptop in the living room (my parents are happy because I get to "sit with them" and they get to distract me while I'm tring to read e-mail), and use the desktop whenever I'm in my room. However, I don't like moving my laptop around too much because I keep having to plug/unplug a dozen (not really, just three or so) peripherals each time I change a location. I don't want to throw my desktop away because I'm sentimental like that, and it still works.

Any brilliant advice would certainly be appreciated. Shameless advocacy is often good, too.

...but I hate using laptops on anything but my lap, so YMMV.

Keep laptop on a coffee table/couch, use desk for writing.
Why do you need two computers? The laptop is more mobile, uses less energy and takes up less desk space. Ditch the desktop.
You could just move the laptop... the nice thing about them is that they are mobile :)
get rid of the desktop?
It's a laptop, can't you sit anywhere with it?
