I figure the cover letter will be enough to explain what kind of a job I'm thinking of doing. I'll include objectives only if I'm not applying to any specific position. I guess I don't see the point of writing an objective that's just a paraphrase of the job description.

They're not taken very seriously in my field, but any additional information helps (as long as the objective isn't so far afield from the particular job that I read it and say "so why are you even interviewing here, if that's your objective?")
But make it vague! Or tailor it to each place you apply.
