Got it cut a lot shorter, which got rid of the damage and made it more inclined to stay straight. The hairdresser blow dried it straight, which was sort of amazing. Wish I could do that every day...

Getting your hair chemically straightened seems like a bad idea, especially if it's long. Try cutting it short. Perhaps see a haircutter to get it cut short (layers?) and ask them for advice.
Chemicals scare me, even though cutting nice long hair makes me sad.
DDDD= Don't -ever- get it permanently straighten, that are people out that that would die for you hair! I'd say do it every day and/or ask some hairstylist for ideas
wait til you have money, try getting it straightened, see how it goes?
Whatever makes you happier.
it's fun to try new things :)

My hair's naturally like that, too. Chemical straightening sounds scary, and shorter haircuts foof out more (personally I'd rather die than go through the trouble of straightening it every day). Your hairdresser can actually thin out your hair (by cutting off chunks here and there) to make it less voluminous. Also, buy a few anti-frizz shampoo/conditioner and products.
Go to a really good stylist and ask about products and techniques that make curly hair behave.
Let it flow free! c.f. Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria. Awesome hair!
It sounds like your hair doesn't want to be straight, so let's forget that. You should figure out how to love it curly. You can keep it long and put serums etc. into it so that it looks shiny and in separate strands. I think coconut and almond oils are god for that. The hair's still going to big, obviously, but I think that looks really good. If you're going to cut it, the cut should depend on the shape of your face and on which features you want to bring out. It'll also probably need to be really short unless you're willing to spend a lot of time styling it. Another option would be to cut it a little shorter and get it thinned, so it's just less poofy.
shaved is sexy
I used to do the same stuff. Let it be what it's trying to be and you'll be beautiful for it.
Welll.............. If you've got the money I'd definitely go with the chem one.... But it depends on your financial situation.
