As it turns out, mail order place delivered in barely enough time, and the b&m didn't have the same thing anyhow. The inferior item from the b&m was returned. (where b&m is staples, not some small vendor)

If the company you bought from online and the company that runs the brick-and-mortar store are the same, then sure. If not, then it's mean.

Is the RMA really that hard? especially if you can blame them?
Return it to the mail order place.
Especially if you bought it on a credit card since they will lose the 2%.
