...but I've been getting to work about lunchtime recently, so I don't fully understand the disadvantages of a long afternoon.

Pick up a snack for the afternoon while you're out, too. Or give yourself time to run out and pick something up to have at your desk in the afternoon. It's an excellent day for ice cream.
