erin: Should I join DAR?

Asked 3 years ago

Yes! It's a great organization that does <insert stuff here>. Plus, it would make my grandmother happy.

No. You're only vaguely interested. You are only doing it because you can and because it would make relatives happy.

I have exactly the same issue, and this is what I've chosen. The political motives of the organization make me feel weird... and taking pride in the fact that your ancestors were a bunch of (technically) treasonous separatists seems kind of arrogant.

When I was in elementary school it struck me as yet another stuck-up excuse for *some* girls to get nice things and other people to not.

Any brilliant advice would certainly be appreciated. Shameless advocacy is often good, too.

What's DAR?

How much commitment does it take? If not much, it seems a cheap/low-effort way to make you relatives happy.

I think that people should only do things that they really want to do. Life's too short. So, if you want to make your grandmother happy, let that be your plan, and do it! But if it is more like a nagging obligation, then don't.

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
