I procrastinated. Incidentally y'all misread the unsafe option above "classic Mini" means a Rover Mini, not a BMW Mini!

Safe is better than cool. It's hard to appreciate cool when you've been smashed to bits by an SUV.
Something with decent millage.
You're only in your car for a few hours a week. Get a practical car, and surprise people by being crazy in other areas of your life.

Minis actually do okay in crash tests, at least with stationary objects. See this comparison with a Ford F-150 pickup: http://www.bridger.us/2002/12/16/CrashTestingMINICooperVsFordF150 (found via Neil Gaiman's blog)
Saabs and VWs break a lot when they get old.

Late-90s Golfs have reliability problems. Get a Smart fortwo - they're actually quite safe, especially over there where the roads aren't covered in SUVs. They bounce.
I actually read "Smart [fortwo]" instead of "Smart Roadster" at first and thought that would be really cool. The little Smart cars are both practical and cool!
