bike repairs on the road suck.
On a long tour, your comfort is important. Get a good touring bike. You'll also be able to use it a lot in the future.
don't spare the initial expense, you'll be glad of it later
I'm assuming your trip to Taiwan is just a trip and not a move, so I'd say just treat yourself while you're already doing such and get a nicer bike. Plus, think about how much harder it would be to accomplish this goal if you were carrying a bunch of shit and then you'd have to be continually fixing stuff and blah!
those of my friends who have biked across the US say that a bike that is comfortable and in good repair is essential. continually repairing an ancient bike may end up costing you in the long run (money and sanity). then again, i don't know what the bike theft rate in taiwan is... in some countries, i've heard that the theft rate is so high that it makes no sense to have a nice bike.
If you're biking that long, a new bike is worth it. Get a bike that's suited for the ride.

renovate?
Less chance of it getting stolen?

One of my friend just finished that about 3 month ago. He has a good bike, but not great nor fancy one. He still finished that in about a week.
In a trial such as this, it is very satisfying to solve problems with your own two hands instead of with money.
