Go for the routine clean wipe, just because it doesn't hurt to do that every now and then to keep the PC happy.

At worst, if it explodes catestrophically, it's summer and you can go outside until you get a new computer.

God, reinstalling Windows is such a pain in the ass.

I have a policy of never making major changes to my systems at times where problems would either cause me to lose important things or suck too much of my time (eg. during term). It sounds like you're at a point like that right now. Definitely budget some time to do the wipe and reinstall as soon as you're out of the woods, though.

What are you running? Without that information, well, hard to answer. Funny how lots of people here either know or assume that you are running Windows, in which case, I'd say, *switch*!

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
