trs has decided My photos are split between my laptop's internal HD (very little space) and an external HD (lots o' space).
They're already backed up (to more than one place!) as it is. Having them in one place will make that slightly easier though, and in general, easier to manage, I think.

Leave them like this.
My choice: Move the photos on the laptop to the external HD so everything is in one place and my laptop gains a magical 35Gb of free space.

Having the same problem with music... unless you use them on a semi-regular basis (i.e. at least 1x/week), move them. You'll love the free space and discover just how often you use the photos.

... but get a second external HD for backups. Data shouldn't only be in one place!

I think external HDDs are slightly lower risk of being stolen? Personally, I'd want them all in backed-up form.
