Doxory?

kareid has decided I'm going on a trip to Canada in a week with my sister and my boyfriend, after which my sister will come stay with us for a day or two. My boyfriend would like to find time for her to meet his parents again, and I'd like to have his parents over to our house again.

My choice: Invite them for dinner the day after we get back and plan on making something simple.

Just make sure they're prepared for something simple and low-key.

Why not invite them over for appetizers (bread, cheese, etc) and then go out to eat? You can have them over to the house, but don't have to make sure you have a full fridge with which to make dinner.

Making something simple shouldn't be impossible; most people are reasonable about this. Pick something simple and tasty - perhaps a good soup that will be nice for summer - this seems like a reasonable rare opportunity, so...

Summertime makes simple a lot easier.

I bet they'll understand. Or consider going out to eat...

You could make stuff in advance and stick it in the freezer.
aletta
you could even just do take out.

Having dinner guests the day after returning from a week long trip is dumb, invite them another time.

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
