but for those of us not intimately familiar with the kind of engineering that goes into bras, and what's appropriate for what amount of cleavage, it's hard to make a knowledgable decision.

Board shorts rule. Can you look elsewhere for better colors for the top?
If you need the shelf bra, going without it for style reasons will probably make you sad. Otherwise, go for style.
