Doxory?

lakmiseiru has decided Going to a wedding tonight. One of the families is partially Chinese (context matters). I have this really nice robedress thingy that's appropriately formal but unmistakably (stylistically) Chinese that I got in Chinatown.

I went with an ensemble of the same colors and same swishiness level that's less likely to offend.

Wear it. It's lovely, fits you well, and in general is the right level of formality, plus it swooshes lovingly. You've gotten tired of skirts and tops.

...but ask someone closer to the family first.

My choice: Not wear it. There's a chance it could offend someone (perhaps more of a chance than at a wedding without the Chinese family element), and that would be bad as well as in poor taste on my part. Wear something else formal instead.

Depends on how well you know these people, but I'd take "avoiding potentially being offensive" over "wear something I like", since you can always wear it some other time.

Why risk it?

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
