The original plan had been to fly to Vegas with my SO for a few days, then get picked up by the family and drive to LBC and spend a few days there... but he decided that he didn't want to go after all...

Continue with the Vegas plan, sans SO and spend a few extra days with the family even though it will drive me crazy and I will be miserable...

This is a toughie, if you think you can have fun in Vegas, I say go for that. There are a lot of cool shows and neat attractions to see, and while sans going sans SO is subpar, you could still have fun. If you think the Vegas part will just be a drag, forget it.

Fly to Cali for the tried and true 3.5 day stay. It keeps me sane and leaves more time for me to finish my work at MIT.

Misery is no good, especially now when things are going crazy. Visit the family for a short while and try for a longer trip with the boy later.
