perturbed has decided After resisting it for years, it seems I need to buy a smart phone... Please suggest something if neither option is appealing.

I have decided for neither. I will wait until OpenMoko v2 comes out. Afterall, the "free" clause is bound to make it "smarter"...

coolworld: I suspect that you'll actually be able to get more done on a Windows Mobile device than an iPhone -- there are probably going to be more useful third party apps.

erin: I'd wait a few months. There are a lot of new phones that are appearing on the market within the next few months that are comparable or better than the iPhone.

Mark: how "smart" does it need to be? The openmoko-based FIC1973 should be shipping sooner than the iPhone...

sauergeek: Treo 700P. Avoid the Windows Mobile ugliness, perfectly capable as a smart phone, and a Palm Pilot to boot. Sprint offers a cheap unlimited data plan as well (dunno about other providers), and with a data plan and third party software, the phone can act as a cellular modem.
Plaisted: Get a blackberry.
Lattyware: Windows FTL, And the iPhone looks like all flash, not substance. Go with something else.

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
