Doxory?

photon has decided What to do with my car? 1994 Toyota Camry with 100,000 miles on it and newish brakes, tires. Body is in good condition as is the interior. Has been living in CA since 2001 and before that in a garage in NY, then was lightly driven in Jersey. It's had some experience on salted roads but has little if no rust. I put 25,000 miles on it junior year of high school and it'd be hard emotionally to let it go/sell it.

I think I'll leave it in CA unless there's a pressing enough reason to have it on the East Coast.

Bring it back (or ship it) to Massachusetts in the fall, pay for insurance, change my license from CA to MA, register it in MA, and just accept the fact that it's going to be expensive and rust in the next five years? I wouldn't have to worry about bumming rides any more, making escaping to Providence or Maine or New York a lot easier. And hey, I'll get to drive, which is something I've missed a lot on this coast.

It'll last more than five years, and having a car is worth it. Just don't advertise that you have one :^)

road trip from Cali to Boston!

You love the car!! Drive it over to Cali and enjoy it till it dies on you...never let your mom keep you car...

Leave the old car in CA, get a cheap car in MA?

You should change your license regardless. A Camry should't break when it is only 13 years old. And having a car is nice.

being able to escape is worth a lot.

My choice: Go the easy route and leave it in California. When my mom's car dies, let her have the Camry, and maybe in five years when I return to the West Coast it'll still be running. Accept that I'll be carless and a lot more restricted in terms of transportation options. On the plus side, I won't have to deal with people bumming rides all the time and this option costs a lot less.

Does a grad student stipend leave you enough money for other good things after (house) rent and (car) insurance?

You can always bring it over in a bit if you find you need it

leave it in CA, why go through all that work when you've been surviving thus far?

Wow, long question, long "x" and "y".

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
