Scanning craigslist and talking with the realtors that we find therein (i.e. find a place, get a showing of that plus the realtor's other places, repeat until satisfied). We'll probably find a place that a realtor shows us, but it will likely be *found* on craigslist.

But start getting realtor (anti-)recommendations.
realtors are a waste of money, plus they skip out on a lot of other options and sometimes have you pay more than you should have. AND it is always less exhausting to hop on the internet than pick up the phone and call a realtor and listen to them trying to sell you themselves...

How long have you been looking? IME, with craigslist, persistence is key. If it's been a while, then it's definitely time for a realtor, but I tend to think that realtors aren't very much value for your money, because it's unclear to me that their loyalties lie with you the purchaser.
Both! realtors tend to be commissioned. You can keep scanning craigslist, while they look.
Apartment Locators are free (they charge the complex not the tenant) and work around your schedule. Look up online or the yellow pages

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
