cygnus183: I'm looking for an entry level DSLR (Reposted with corrected info and updates)

Get the Nikon D40 (6MP), save $200 to spend on lenses, flash, etc.

Or save it towards your next camera.

Do you *know* the optics and sensor are good enough for a real 10MP image? Many film SLRs, even with ISO 50 film, won't be suitable for blowing up that big, and most digital sensors have horrific shot noise.

At entry level? I'd go with the cheaper camera and use the extra money to explore the various accessory options.

Spend less money at first then learn better options always exist after you have spent your own hard-earned money. :-)

Get the newer D40x (10MP) for $200 more. It's the exact same camera but with 4 extra mega pixels and the ISO goes down to 100 (D40's lowest is ISO200). The sensor size is about the same as a D40 and it's not the same 10MP sensor as the D80 or D200.

Ooo, smaller ISOs. I'm not sure what your budget for accessories is, but $200 won't go too far in terms of lenses (it may get you a nice polarized filter, though).
Mark
check dpreview in particular (the real shooting samples at low ISO in particular.) At that scale the ISO is probably more useful than the megapixels.

Compare the picture quality.

lenses are important, but so is sensor quality. Read reviews?

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
