It's always useful to have a laptop, just in case you might want to get some work done, or some occasional serious browsing. Just don't use it too often.
6.5 weeks is a long time without 'net...
Bring the laptop, make a conscious effort not to spend more time on it than you think you should

unless a laptop would be useful to have during movies/forums.
As long as you're ok with not being constantly connected for such a lengthy period.
there's so much neat stuff there that you won't easily get to see again. unless you're from new zealand.

focus on absorbing the program and meeting peers there, and spending time geeking out with them - the "hallway track" is the best part of any conference :-)
Explore the country because you are already there. Save the internet surfing for when you get back. Of course, bring the laptop if you go exploring and want to download all those digital pictures that you take while you are exploring the wonderful 'Land Down Under'.
Bring a good book

Take your laptop and go to internet cafes so you can save files and pics
