Probably depends a lot on how big your entries are though
If a post gets popular, it'll probably be permalinked anyway, and if Google likes you, it likes your entire site.

I hate having to search around for how to go back in time when I like a blog. With reasonably fast internet, there's little reason to limit it.
People who visit your blog via the homepage (rather than rss or a link to a specific post) will want to see a significant set of articles. More than 10 is definitely appropriate.
I hate clicking the "Archive" link.
I'd say you want to keep approximately a weeks' worth of entries, so that people can check not terribly often without following links.
As much as load times sanely allow. And blog entries aren't that big.

I think you should make the home page about 3-5 screen-scrolls tall. How many blog entires will it take for you to reach 4 screenfuls?
10 is a nice number.
It depends on the length of the entries. I have a habit of discovering blogs and then reading them, basically starting at the homepage and working backwards; the front-page should be a decent-sized web page, although I can't define "decent-sized".

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
