Doxory?

jtu has decided Sometimes I sketch on paper and want to keep it around.

Not quite the first cheap scanner, but not doing a thorough job at all on this.

My choice: Buy the first cheap scanner Amazon will sell me - they're just sketches and I'm unlikely to need anything good.

Check to see if it works with your O/S of choice. If you don't also have a fax/print/copier, you might want to get some sort of combo machine. I have a very Linux friendly HP Officejet 5610xi, which ran around ~120, and does all 4 (though I haven't tested the fax part yet.

reuse! seriously, though, i think it's very difficult to buy a flatbed scanner that's entirely inappropriate.

I think the scanner I got for archiving my family albums was ~$100 and still pretty good. Come to think of it, you should ask for consent before sketching on the paper.

Even the cheap ones don't suck these days.

Spend time/effort finding something good - haven't looked at scanners in years.

...but not much time/effort. Perhaps ask zephyr what people are happy with.

A scanner will last for a while, and you'll use it for other purposes as well.

I don't think you'll find much quality difference with the scanners. But you might want to consider a scrap book.

I use an OfficeJet 5500, which is a printer and fax machine too. It does an adequate job of all of these tasks, but if you wanted to do a lot of one of those tasks you'd be better off getting a specialized machine. The scan is quite hi-res for most of my purposes -- e.g. www.sharemation.com/%7Emilele/public/images/crafts/wntk/index.html

If you make a stupid choice because a website tells you to, it's your own damn fault.
